Updating Adobe Photoshop Elements

On my present computer I have got Photoshop Elements 7 and lots of photos I created and filed using this.
I am about to transfer these photos to my new computer via an external drive backup. No problems so far (hopefully!).
BUT I have bought Photoshop Elements 12 to go on my new computer. When I have used this before it has somehow "updated" my old files.
Am I likely to find any problems if I just load 12 or should I load 7 first as well?
Many thanks for any advice.

I would transfer all the photographs to your new PC to their new location, just as you would any other data files. Then load PSE 12 and tell it to "find" your photos. Just abandon PSE 7 - your photos are not inside it.
PSE doesn't actually "file" your photographs - they are just stored where you say.
Unless they have changed it, PSE was a little bit odd in the way that it "stores" your photos in its Organizer. It finds the location of the photo and then stores a thumbnail (in PSE) and a link to the location of the full sized photograph. You can later end up with the very annoying problem of having the Thumbnail in PSE - but PSE can't find the actual photo because you have either moved it or (worse !) deleted it !0 -
Many thanks, that's very useful.0
