Ants!

How do you get rid of them these days?
There was a large ants nest in our greenhouse (seem to have built soil up from below the concrete flooring through some cracks) which I put some ant powder and boiling water on before removing.
While I was removing it, I noticed a lot of ants were still actually alive. I've since put more ant powder down and put some ant traps from B&Q in there - but the ants are still alive!
Does anyone know of anything really lethal still on the market to get rid of them? We want to start growing things in the green house next year, but we won't get far with these pests.
Thanks.

If it's outside the house i just pour boiling water over any holes they seem to be coming from.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

The best I,ve ever found is Doff Ant Powder which they take back to their nest and it kills the lot but not in five mins. It needs to be left a day or so. Problem is it.s hard to find now, I got my last lot last year off the internet. This is the stuff and the same price that I paid.

Are they a problem? As in what are they doing that causes a problem or is it just they are ants where you don't want 'em?Tim0

You could always do what this bloke does

Not very conventional but a pretty cool way to get rid of something you don't want0 -
You could always try this. Don't knwo if it works but you never know.
Ant Killer
What's so cool about this is, it took them 2 minutes to find it and 5 minutes to fill up like the pic ! Wow
1 empty water bottle
(Cut it down to about 2" tall)
5 Tbsp of baking soda
5 Tbsp of powdered sugar
3 Tbsp of water.
The very best way of eliminating ants is truly simple:
Take a small amount of powdered sugar (also called icing sugar) and mix it with an equal amount of baking soda (formally called sodium bicarbonate) and water.
Powdered sugar is essential. You cannot use the larger grains of sugar for this..
Mix the two powders together and water then place small amounts against the walls or other areas where you would not normally walk but where you would normally see the ants.
The ants will be attracted to the sugar and will eat some of it and collect more to take home to feed others, so all of them will get their share.
The sugar and baking soda powders are similar in size and, once mixed together, the ants cannot separate the two items, so, as they eat the sugar, they will also ingest the baking soda, which they would otherwise never touch. This is the reason for using powdered sugar.
Once the ants eat the baking soda it will react with the formic acid in their stomachs and cause gas. The bodies of ants are unlike humans and they cannot eliminate gas so it will build up inside and eliminate them0 -
The anthill art id pretty cool, but probably not for me.
Tim, nothing personal against the ants no - they are just ants where I don't want 'em basically.
I'll have a look at that doff ant powder, thanks john. First I think I'll give tiree's suggestion a go and give them some baking powder.0 -

I always use the liquid stuff in the tube you can buy
A few drops on bit of card, plastic etc. repeat for a few days.
They eat it and take it back to the nest.0 -
I have tried the little bait traps with the tube of gel. The ants wouldnt go near it.
My compost bin is full of them at the moment. So i expect excellent compost for next year. Not near the house so i leave them to it.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
