He already has the old plates...so assuming the car gets assigned those plates again we can swap them over quickly. Just can we change the plates when he gets the certificate of retention and drive away with the car on new plates but with NO V5 then when the V5 comes back a few weeks later sign it and send it off? Or do we have to wait for the V5 with the new reg plate on it to come back before we can drive away?

Even assuming he gets the old plates, there is some paperwork to adhere to, I cannot remember the certificate number, but it's all law, otherwise you may end up posting another thread on a related topic, it's just not worth it for the sake of waiting for some paperwork.

I went through the same process, bought a car with a private plate. The seller sent off the V5C to put the plate on retention and while waiting for that I bought the car and drove it home, taking its original number plates with me in the boot. He then posted the amended V5C and MOT certificate to me showing the new number, which was in fact the original number, and I put the old plates on and told my insurer.

Direct line do not charge for updating a policy in this instance, or didn't two years ago when I did it.

    Not difficult at all.

I've done it the other way, sold (or agreed to sell) a car that had a plate that we (the company) wanted to keep. The DVLA paperwork for taking the plate off does stress that until you have received the replacement V5, MOT and so on, you should not dispose of the vehicle because they might want to inspect it.
