    Vancouver...

Sorry, can't suggest anywhere. Now if it was the USA I could recommend a couple of places.

I'm sure that you won't have a problem getting hold of the Maples in Canada.

as it happens, BullionVault is walking distance away from me.
if i was buying i think i would look to hold the physical metal myself.

Well, Bullionvault will let you withdraw, if you have at least about £1200 of gold or £420 of silver with them, and will apply hefty charges.

All in all, if I wanted bars I'd buy through a different route as it's too expensive to withdraw from BV, imo.

Have read this thread with great interest as its something i've been pondering....

so to sum up... in a nutshell....

Would buying a 1kg lump of silver at £496.80 including VAT and delivery from bullionbypost.com and leaving it under the bed for twenty years be very clever?

please, team... don't use long words if you reply!

i think it would a strangely interesting investment to have.
over that timeframe, i suspect Silver will appreciate in value. but whether there are alternatives that will appreciate further..very difficult to say. arguably you'd be better off with something that generates an income aswell as having the potential to appreciate in value.

Do you have other investments and are looking to spread your wealth around a bit?

If you don't- then probably not. Other things will probably (based on previous performance) give a better return, after all costs are taken into account. Which are significant:

As of today, Bullionbypost would buy that bar back from you immediately for £357. This means you've immediately lost £140 (plus shipping costs to get it back to them). If the price of silver increased by just 1.7% above inflation for the next 20 years, then you'd break even. That's quite a strong headwind, in my opinion!

If you do have other investments- then possibly; diversification has its advantages. But if you really want something a bit "different", then the other options mentioned in this thread that have fewer tax/transaction costs etc) options would probably still be better.

Personally, I don't own any precious metals for investment purposes, only decorative ones!

    Thanks for the above post....

I don't have much in the way of other investments so i think i can lay my thoughts to rest about piling up blocks of silver in my cellar!

boring old ISA it is then!

    :(
