It is horrid to live with, a bit like getting the old aches and pains - some days are worse than others.
You shouldn't have any problem flying as long as there is no infection.
Go and enjoy your holiday you may even get some relief just getting away from it all, I did until we landed back home and it all came back again - grrr.

Just wondered if anybody has any thoughts or suggestions.
I've had tinnitus for years and have learned to live with it. My head was scanned to see if there was any physical reason for it, nope. It can be brought on by something physical and so I do suggest that you persevere with the NHS. I even tried acupuncture as it has been shown to work for some people. After three months Dr Dung (honest) told me he didn't think it was going to work and to stop paying him.

Mine is constant in both ears with the left slightly louder than the right and every so often I will get an additional "key tinkling" in the left. I am fortunate that if I concentrate on a book or something I can ignore it and I do use music to mask it sometimes.

I hope yours is of a type that can be cured.

When you eventually see an ENT consultant, you may be referred to an audiology therapist. Mine is wonderful!

She has given me relaxation CDs, various sound machines, but most if all her understanding.

BTW:'the best machine I had was one from Boots, with waves as the best. Rain makes me want to get up for a wee!

I like the thought of a wave machine. I think the sound of the sea would remind me of being on a cruise.

The noise level in my ear today has been at 'low hiss', which I find manageable. It's 'incessant ring' that I struggle with, and the time I had 'vacuum cleaner' at work made it a struggle to concentrate on anything.

Just taking it a day at a time at present, but plan to go back to the GP next week.

I have Tinnitus in my right ear.

At first I thought it was the neighbour's bass next door, sadly not.

I too thought it was ear wax, but again, sadly not.

You can learn to live with it - at the moment I don't hear it when other things are happening - work, TV etc, but when I lay down at night...not all nights though, thankfully.

I have tinnitus which is an irritation as I have super normal hearing in my left ear so hear things that people can't normally hear. I learn to tune things out otherwise I would be driven demented by hearing the sounds in my ears combined with sounds outside.

Hi, I thought I'd just do an update on what's happened since I started this thread on the 6th May, when I had a really bad bout of tinnitus.

After that day, I had one other bad 'spike', but apart from that the noise is at a liveable level, generally a low white noise, and sometimes a whine. Most of the time it's not too noticeable during the day, although I hear it at night sometimes, but I have a fan on to distract me. I've bought a sound generator, but so far have only needed to use it once.

The steam inhalation the doctor told me to do was useless...... I went back and got an ENT referral. I went private to speed things up a bit, and it turns out that I've got a fairly sudden sensorineural hearing loss in my right ear, which is an inner ear thing, so steam inhalation was no good at all !

I've had an MRI scan which has fortunately come back clear. in this sort of case only about 10% of people find out what caused the hearing loss. I'm having blood tests done, but the consultant thinks they'll all be normal, so I will probably never know for sure what caused this.

I've had some vertigo, and I've been referred to a Balance Clinic about this. I've also got an Audiology referral in July, to see about hearing aids. My hearing loss is in the mild to moderate category, so could have been a lot worse.

I'm going on holiday on Saturday, as it's an inner ear thing, there's nothing to stop me flying.

So I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who replied to this thread, it was very helpful on a day when I was feeling quite desperate.

But I'm still quite shocked that I've got a permanent hearing loss, so I've got to get used to this - amazing how life can change so quickly

If you are going on holiday I wonder if you will get the tinnitus while you are away.

I'm not sure if I suffer from tinnitus or not. I can hear a very low frequency hum at times. Nobody else seems to be able to hear it. Background noise drowns it it.

The odd thing is that it is location dependent. I notice that I don't hear it in all parts of the UK or when I am abroad.

I believe tinnitus is affecting me, but have not have it checked out, just came back from a holiday to Turkey, don't no why but this horrible background bus disappeared completely when away, sadly it has now come back again.
So for some people flying may not do any harm.
