Sony 5 year warranty

I bought a sony 40" tv/bluray combi with five year warranty. The dvd player stopped working after very little use. Rang sony in Jan 14 and it went locally for repair. Part no longer available so have been offered a home cinema system?? This is a known fault with these units and I am appalled at the time it has taken for this (unsuitable in my opinion) offer to be made. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. TV cost £800 and system offered costs around £200.

Is the Blu Ray built into the TV ?

It actually seems a pretty good deal to me assuming you have an available HDMI port to plug the cinema system into.

How old was the TV when the blu ray broke ?

sounds like a good deal.....replacement dvd player and a 5.1 system thrown in for the inconvenience. 10/10 for Sony

  • Tv bought Sept 10. Other Sony forum users have received full refunds! This has been a problem with this and a similar 32". I don't really have room for cinema system with 5 speakers. I bought the combi for less wires, space etc.
  • Good point! My tv only has one HDMI currently used by Sky box.

So it's 3 1/2 years old. I really would not expect a full refund, in fact taking into account the use you have had of the TV then the £200 cinema system is a great deal as any refund given may be adjusted for age/use of the product. Probably less than £200 to be honest.

You generally don't have to use the speakers supplied with a cinema system, the sound will play normally through the TV.

An HDMI splitter would solve the lack of a spare HDMI port (although many cinema systems allow you to plug another input into them)

When you consider that you can now buy a 40" LED Smart TV for £450 you will not receive a full £800 refund on a 4 year old TV.

Why? 99% of people would probably be happy with Sony's offer, but if there's a reason the OP wanted a combined unit, then I don't think it's unreasonable that they'd prefer to stick with a combined unit and ask the question.
  • Thanks those who offered help and advice. I have received a full refund of the original purchase price of the tv/dvd almost 6 months after first contacting Sony.
