usb ports stopped working out the blue

I used my usb ports on my acer e1-571 laptop last week with my british gas home top up devices, and to take photos off my camera, all working fine.
Tried to add some music to a memory stick yesterday and the ports arent recognising any of my memory sticks. have tried plugging my camera and kindle in, and they light up like theres power getting to them but arent opening like they should.
I have checked the troubleshoot and it says there are no problems and it says generic usb hubs working properly in hardware.
Can anyone shed any light on how i can get them working again???

try a system restore to when it was working
and check device manager!!

From memory I had a similar problem using xp. The solution was to delete the correct IDE channel found via control panel, admin tools, comp manager, device manager, IDE controller. After deleting, restart and that channel should be reset and working.
Hopefully others can add to this.0 -
ive done the system restore, still nothing
its windows 8 if that makes any difference.
Have tried acer online support earlier, was like pulling teeth, was repeating myself over and over. My kindle is currently plugged in and has charged via one of the ports, but it doesnt recognize it as a device. Acer said to reset the whole computer basically wiping everything and starting from scratch-which given i cant backup my pics etc via usb im reluctant to do.
anyone else any ideas?0 -
did it start with the british gas device?
did you system restore to before the problem started
if you're sure the usb devices youre plugging in are ok, backup to dvd, or use a linux boot cd to get access to your data and usb devices, see speedup sticky thread
,then create the windows dvd and factory restore
A proper backup would have helped in this situation http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx!!

Can you store your data on a cloud somewhere? Like dropbox? You get a certain amount for free. If you can store it using the free allowances of multiple clouds then you can do a full system restore to see if that works.
Just a thought, are you using battery power or is it plugged in? Because power saving settings might be on, check that before anything.0
