OK it's not the most popular email client, and I used to think it was expensive too, but it seems there's a way to get it for nothing (at least on Windows).

According to http://vowe.net/archives/011655.html it's perfectly legal to install and use Notes at home without a licence by downloading the Domino Designer package, and only installing the Notes client, which comes packaged with it.

I've done this on two Windows machines and so far so good.

I'm not sure what the position is on the Mac and Linux. Domino Designer is not available for these platforms, though Notes itself is and Volker Weber implies that licences are only needed if you access a Domino server. I've installed the evaluation version on Linux and will wait and see if anything happens after 90 days.
