I have a little used Dell notebook, which I have now started to use. It came new with a student version of windows installed. When using it a message says that it is not using a legal version of windows. When I try and verify it it doesn't work. I can still use the machine but worried about the messages.:(

I presume when you say you tried to verify it that you do actually have a Windows Licence Key either stuck on the computer or in the paperwork that came with it?
Which version of Widows is it ... XP perhaps?
Since you've only just started to use it after a period of non-use, have you been able to run Windows Update successfully?... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -
Sounds as if he is referring to Office as opposed to Windows.
Perhaps the Office trial period has run out.
If this is not the case, I can take a closer look.0 -
Agree with Niftydigits. I got a trial of Office with my laptop but it ran out a while ago. I get a similar message if i go into anything. I can read documents in view only but can't print or make amendments.
I did get Office starter but that only allows me to make new documents, not open anything in them, and the functionality is very limited. I use Open Office for most things.3 stone down, 3 more to go0 -
Many thanks all , it is windows 7starter, which I know is limited, cannot verify as windows key has 4 letters rubbed off. I thought I saw somewhere that there was a site that could find your key, or am I daft.0

So it is a NETbook. Brand name and model number?
Have sent you a private message.0
