Yes, it will be cheaper just not to use HS1, so I think I will go Central line to Liverpool St and then Hammersmith & City line to King's Cross.

It seems a shame to take half an hour doing a journey that could take less than 10 minutes, but it is much cheaper.

Interestingly I have since found another forum (sorry, I can't post links) which quotes Boris as saying that discussions are under way to include this stretch of HS1 in the oyster zone, so maybe it will change later in the year (I hope!).

    Thanks again for your replies.

He would like to but he would have to compensate SET quite highly for passengers to use their shiny trains with a normal TC.

Your timings are only true if you get to the station and immediately step onto a train. Tube trains are much more frequent than Javelin trains so your average wait will be shorter. I don't think the difference in time will be that great.

@martindow - In the mornings they are pretty frequent (every 6-8 minutes) and I live close enough to the station that I could actually aim for a particular time anyway. Also, with the tube there's a change half way.

@J B h - Yes unfortunately you are right and I'm not sure they'll ever come to an agreement! I would actually be willing to pay more for the service to be included, but I'm not willing to pay full price for both.

That was discussed on the RailUK Forum a couple of months ago. I am also, not permitted to link to that forum. So I won't. However I believe I am permitted to link to this: http://questions.london.gov.uk/QuestionSearch/searchclient/questions/question_272592
A great deal of progress has been made because the Secretary of State has agreed in principle to the idea of Oyster being extended on High Speed 1 from St Pancras and Stratford.
