Hopefully that will stick in the brain - have travelled a lot with Monarch on scheduled, will try keep them in the Thomas Cook Hall of Shame for charters...

The only ooohs and aaars I've ever had with any luggage has been Jet2 - 0.6kg over on 2 hold bags (22kg each booked, total 44.6kg) - sucking of teeth, long discussion, we'll let you off this time, don't do it again... prats (even the dreaded Ryanair have said meh/puh for that level of overweight). I did offer to transfer my sandals from case to pocket if this would let them off the hook for overloading the aircraft (fairly early in the teeth-sucking), but had the impression this was a bit of a whoosh/over the 'ead.

They were probably just making you sweat i'm under the impression you only get charged for each full kilo over weight and that's why they pretended they were letting you off.
Ooh Betty I couldn't be arsed with all that why don't you just bite the bullet and pay for the luggage especially if your going to a wedding.

How much is a checked bag? I tend to think paying for one may be the better option..5kg is ridiculous, many bags weigh half that on their own and if you take a handbag as well that has to conform to total size and total weight (5kg) restrictions

Yeah, I'm starting to wonder now! However, I've managed to get most things (except toiletries, chargers, medication etc) into a bag, total weighing 5.1kg (it's an extra-light bag), so hoping to get away with it. I might bite the bullet and pay next time - I think it was ~£50, which is why I wasn't keen.

    Damn! That's mean!
I wonder if you can wear 14 pairs of knickers and still fit in your seat? Hmmm.... :D

I'm sure that, even with 14 prs of knickers on, Bett's hips won't measure the same as mine and I fit in just fine!
  • I have a big jacket with lots of pockets that I'm planning on wearing...

Same principle but actually an ex-military jacket:

Although I've dyed it black because I'm not up to date with which uniforms might be offensive to different nationalities...
  • Me and my lovely wife never take hold luggage... Nearly always fly easyjet, so no weight limits on hand luggage, lots of big pockets, and we've got nice holdalls with compression straps to get them through the size gauge... Only problem we ever had was in Budapest where they were trying everyone's luggage in the gauge... several people had already been told theirs were too big, and were struggling to repack... my wife's bag didn't quite go in, and the staff were just about to say something when I leaned in, rotated it through 90 degrees and it fitted... just! we seem to be able to fit everything we need for a fortnight in our hand luggage, including my camera, binoculars, spotting scope and tripod.... And we tend to travel around a lot on holiday (hate spending more than 3 nights in one place!) but we do wash clothes in the shower and dry it in the back of the car!
