The latest release is 4.4.2 which you should be able to get through an over the air update. I'm surprised it didn't offer updates before.

Settings/About/System updates should bring up an option to check at least.

The Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit offersthe option to install just about any stock rom and root if you want to.

The factory images are available here

You can flash the latest one in a couple of minutes in Fastboot

Your simplest option is going to be to keep trying for an over the air update because you will get it in time. TBH there doesn't seem to be a huge difference with 4.4.2 over what was on mine when I bought it about 18 months ago.

If you do decide to do the job manually then the toolkit I linked to is easy to use and there are umpteen blogs that describe both that and other methods to flash it. I use rooted stock roms as that opens up a few options not available without the root but doesn't make me a pioneer with non standard roms.
