Not at all.
It's a bit dumb to take a lock off and wander off to the shops with it. Who know who might be passing the unlocked and unlockable front door!
Hence the friend.
(of course, if the door has two locks, as some do, then I agree the friend is not needed)
Why would you take the lock with you?0 -
Yes, depending on the lock type, you could measure the backset, the case height, the forend length & width, the lock depth. And check how many levers. Why would you take the lock with you?
But for a 1st-time DIYer, far easier to take it with you and ask the locksmith for a matching lock!
Good grief. Does it really have to be spelled out? Maybe I should just have advised the OP to pay a locksmith £150 for a home visit. That way the friend could stay in the pub.0 -
Might be a good idea to pay someone if you arent very confident. Wouldnt walk around with a washing machine when looking for a new one....0

First time I changed the barrels on one of my rental properties I took the barrels with me to make sure I got it right(first time for everything), just browse the internet for a washing machine....(bit of an over-kill for comparison)Might be a good idea to pay someone if you arent very confident. Wouldnt walk around with a washing machine when looking for a new one....2 kWp SEbE , 2kWp SSW & 2.5kWp NWbW.....in sunny North Derbyshire17.7kWh Givenergy battery added(for the power hungry kids)0 -
Could take the lock out, photo and video it from every angle, video round the lock area etc... then put it back and take your video phone to the shop

You'd need to video it alongside a ruler/tape measure to get the mesurments (all of them) right.
Another idea would be to install a large bolt on the inside of the door. Exit via the backdoor. And take the lock to the locksmith.
Again, no need for a friend.
But why is everyone assuming poor skintnurse has no friends as well as no money?0 -
As said before you need to decide what you want. I suspect that you'd be better off out of there if you can arrange it.
You can, of course change the locks to protect yourself.
Check with the relevant schemes whether the deposit has been protected ( there is a list on the shelter website I believe) or whether she just failed to inform you about it. If as you believe the deposit is not protected then you have more power to negotiate your exit and could potentially sue the landlord for not protecting your deposit.
Have a think about what you want and people can advise you on how/when to serve notice, how to negtiate to leave with the deposit not being protected etc.
Best of Luck
