No gas supplier, it would seem
Options
Quick question I hope someone can help with - there are similar questions on here, but none of them answer mine.
I moved house a month ago. We have sorted the electric supplier, but as yet don't know who our gas supplier is. The landlord doesn't know, and I've called the Enquiry Helpline, which gives me the MPRN number, but no supplier.
So;
- who else can I contact to find this?
- can I find the supplier with the MPRN number in some way?
- Can I switch suppliers without knowing who the current supplier is, if I have the MPAN number?
I've considered ringing all the main suppliers and asking them, but if I'm honest I don't really trust them to get the information right, from bitter experience in the past.
The electric is with eON, and as they've automatically put me on their standard tariff I'm keen to get off it, but I want a dual fuel tariff because it'll clearly save money, hence I'm keen to sort this out reasonably quickly. The gas is the main fuel in the house, previously we had economy 7 electric storage heaters and it's been 7 years since I had anything gas, so I'm a little unsure on how much this is likely to cost.
Anyway. Any help appreciated, thankyou.

Used to work for the Halifax; now works for another bank. Any comments are my opinion or suggestion, not a recommendation!

Just phone Eon and quote your MPRN and ask them to supply your gas.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

if you are shipperles you have no registered supplier, the longer its left the more chance you will loose service at the road. Also once caught on the network will bill you at a high rate.
Contact your chossen supplier with the mprDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0 -
Hi beetwaste
Hope the house move went well and wasn't too stressful.
As chanz4 says, with a shipperless gas supply where there's no registered supplier, you can choose who you'd like as your gas provider.
Once chosen, let them have the Meter Serial Number, an up to date reading, the full postal address, any plot number and the Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) the enquiry line gave you.
It would also help to speed things up if you can advise details of any tags on the pipes or labels starting with 'property of...'
Once the gas account is set up, you can see about adding this to the electricity, either with us or the supplier of your choice.
Sometimes, it can take a few weeks to sort out a shipperless site. So, if you decide to stay with us, we can set you up on an interim tariff until the gas is sorted. The gas can then be added later.
If you decide to change to another supplier you may want to move the electricity tariff before the gas is live.
As you're on our standard Energy Plan, there aren't any cancellation fees or tie-ins. This leaves you free to switch whenever you like without penalty.
Hope this helps beetwaste. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.

How can the landlord not know who the utility suppliers are?
Doesn't bode well for the future. Obviously the LL hasn't paid the bill, or even registered, prior to you moving in
(In the event you moved in on the same day as the previous tenants left, why didn't you ask them ... and I'm sure the LL would still be able to contact them if he could be bothered)
Unlilkely the property has no supplier. Even new builds usually need a supplier just to get the meter installed in the first place.
If it's not a new build, who's been paying for the gas consumption since the property was built/gas installed??? and to whom?
In England, Wales and Scotland, if you do not know who supplies gas to your home, contact the Meter Point Administration Service on 0870 608 1524.
Once you find the supplier & register, use a comparison site. Dual fuel is rarely the cheapest option today, even with a dual fuel discount (typically a few quid). I doubt Eon is cheapest for electricity either.0 -
Best to put it in writing OP, recorded delivery or proof of posting.
Then if still no action from anyone, and you have gas, possibly free.
You should not be sorting out other peoples mistakes.0 -

Problem is the networks go by their own rules, if you dont pay for a shipperless supplys gas thats been used they can and will chop it off at the road. They can also go back 6 years legally.Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it.
