Cat & dog flea protection

I have a cat and a large (30kg) dog. I have been using Frontline on them both on a monthly basis and the price racks up! Just wondered if there are any recommendations for either cheap online sources or for cheaper, but effective, alternatives.

I always use Stronghold from the vets, but it is not cheap.

Do not use Bob Martin products under any circumstances.

I've never used Bob Martin because I've been told a few times that they are ineffective.

Are there any other reasons I should know about?

Well, they are not only ineffective but downright dangerous. If you google for reviews, you will see what I mean (but be warned, it is upsetting).

If Frontline works for you (there are some people who have found it no longer works on their animals) then you need to look for a flea treatment that contains Fipronil (the active ingredient in Frontline). Some brands include Eliminall, Effipro, Fiprospot, Flevox and can work out cheaper than Frontline.

Flevox has been OK for our little hairy monster. Much cheaper than Frontline and contains the same active ingredient.

Do you really need to do them monthly? With mine I've tended to do them when they start scratching a bit more, usually a couple of times a year, and I've not had an infestation as yet. *says she, tempting fate.*

I've had the odd flea in the house, but zapping them with frontline at the time and upping the cleaning routine seems to have sorted it so far.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

The only spot on for lungworm is Advocate. It's only available on prescription. It also takes care of fleas, ticks and all worms except Tapeworm.
Milbemax is a worm treatment that can help prevent Lungworm, but Advocate is the one that treats it.

Panacur Small Animal 10% Oral Suspension also treats lungworm

    Other:
Also for the treatment of dogs infected with lungworm Oslerus (Filaroides) osleri or protozoa Giardia spp. and cats infected with lungworm Aelurostrongylus abstrusus.

Also has an ovicidal effect on nematode eggs.

Advantix is for prevention and treatment of fleas and ticks, available to buy on the internet without prescription. Any of the ones containing Fipronil also say they're for fleas and ticks.

If you'd rather not use chemicals then Billy No Mates is for fleas and ticks.
