I went to New Look to get what I thought would be a seemingly straight-forward refund on a dress I bought. It was within the 28 day time frame, I had the receipt and the Debit card that I had originally paid with.

Anyway it all seemed ok until the Cashier said :'ohhh your debit card isnt signed on the back so you cant get a refund'

So I reply ' well what difference does that make, it is the same card that I originally paid with as you can see from my receipt, and as it's a chip and pin card it s totally irrelevant whether its signed or not!'

He demanded an additional signed card which I did not have...

Clearly on his high horse, he pointed to the small text on the signature strip of the debit card 'not valid unless signed' ... he then ordered me to sign the card there and then in front of him or I wouldnt get my refund, then he got on his walkie talkie to get his supervisor to check if I could now get my refund. Clearly enjoying his power trip.

B***y JOBSWORTHS!! If the card is not valid, then how come they didnt bother checking when I bought £80 worth of goods, or whenever I have spent money there as a regular customer, yet they check when I want a £25 refund!

I have spent hundreds using my debit card and have never had an issue about whether it was signed or not (until now on a poxy refund).

Where you required to also sign a piece of paper which they kept for the refund? If so the reason they needed the card to be signed was because the signature on the card has to match the signature on the refund receipt because only the cardholder can return the item. If you do not have any other signed ID (other card, driving licence etc) you're not actually supposed to be allowed to do the refund at all, so I'd be glad of the assistant allowing you to sign the card in front of him to get it because they're not supposed to allow that.

Nowhere checks the card is signed when taking chip and pin payments because you sign via your PIN number instead of via signature. If chip and pin is ever not working and you are asked to swipe the card instead you would face the same issue with an unsigned card not being accepted.

Why is it so much hassle to sign your card ?

I've had 2 refunds this week at New Look, no problems. My card is signed by the way.

All I see is a member of staff doing what they are paid to do, just sign your card and you shouldnt have any problems getting a refund.

I have to ask why was it already signed ?
Your meant to sign them when you receive the card.
