Carer Allowance

Options
Hi,

My father is over 80 and in receipt of Pension credit and carer allowance. My wife is looking after him. She is thinking to apply for carer allowance.

If carer allowance is approved will that effect any of my fathers benefits?

Thanks
MS

    Do you mean Attendance Allowance?

If your father receives a severe disability premium in his benefits, this will be affected if someone claims carers allowance for him.

Carers allowance will affect Severe Disability Premium.
It will (may) have an effect on Council Tax Reduction and possibly Housing Benefit. Research it yourself, I just remember on top of my head. These will be the only ones affected in my most humble opinion.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

If your father receives a severe disability premium in his benefits, this will be affected if someone claims paid carers allowance for him.

If they receive the underlying entitlement then it would not effect their Extra Amount for Severe Disability Premium (EASD) paid along with your Pension Credit.

If the carer receives "paid" carers allowance, then your dad would continue to receive their EASD Premium until the carer receives their first payment of carers allowance which could be several weeks or even months down the line from application.

Your dad should then notify the DWP the carers has gone into payment to prevent any over payment of his benefits, although in most cases the carers allowance unit let us know, but not always straight away. A quick phone call or letter will suffice making sure your dad quotes his national insurance / reference number on any correspondence.
