carpet cleaning - what is the cheapest way?

Hi,
I have 1 carpet to clean 2m x 1.7m. So it is not big. I believe any cleaning company would charge me arm and leg to clean it while the carpet was bought for less than £50 not sure if it is worth it.
Could anyone recommend any economical way to clean the carpet? Perhaps decent cleaning product or some old fashion gradma's idea which would do the trick?
Many thanks

Vax carpet shampoo and a sponge, or the TV shopping product which has been around for decades 'no wet wonderfoam'.0
