Should I ignore web 'update' prompts for my HP printer?

I had to ditch my last printer, an Epson, owing to the fact that it would no longer accept cheaper, generic cartridges. I was told that Epson had installed an 'accept-only-OUR-cartridges' command, quite likely, via an online update.
Personally, I can't see why any printer should actually need any update, and am suspicious of these prompts from HP Central which I have studiously ignored so far.
Can anyone share their thoughts?

My Brother printer nags about an update from time to time, but it works perfectly, so why risk upsetting the apple cart? My Netgear router did the same and when I installed the new firmware it halved the network speed by adding a routine that prevents channel bonding if there are any other wifi networks anywhere in the vicinity. Equipment is most likely to get bricked when you update firmware.
If it ain't broke...0 -
Generally updates improve things but, of course they may be botched or introduce new and unwelcome things. Most people, for example, install Windows updates because of security concerns. They also install updates to various parts of their anti virus software.
If you have suspicions that HP will introduce something to your disadvantage then google it before installing to see if others have found a problem.0 -
The Epson trick was an update to the printer firmware which they got users to install along with a driver update. I've not heard of any other manufacturer doing this.
I'm surprised that you chose HP as I thought even compatibles for them were quite expensive but pleased that you didn't buy another Epson.0 -
Yeah I never update because of this ...they somehow can tell if you do not use an HP ink cartridge...Would only update if you start having serious issues with your printer is my advice.0

Ok, thanks for the replies.
Yes, to echo again what's been said, I can't see why a printer would need updates to do its job (which it does perfectly well already). Much as though I'd like to think well of HP, I can only come up with things advantageous to them, rather than me, which any 'update' might produce...0 -
I got rid of my Epson printer because it wouldn't operate at all if one of the cartridges were empty. You couldn't even print out in a different colour. I've changed back to HP 'cos if one colour runs out at least I can continue printing also it doesn't seem to mind non original cartridges. Because of the Epson issue I dont install any updates either on the same premise as you CharltonSmall victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0
