Website for house improvement quotations?

Does anyone know of one which will give rough quotations (London area), rather than asking for quotes on say ratemyjob.com? We're starting to cost up a massive project to redo the whole house (from the roof downwards, inside and out, electrics, new kitchen etc), and I'd like to get some figures together and try to figure out priorities. Many thanks for any suggestions :)

  • I don't know of such a site. And it is hard to see how 1 could ever be useful. Take "Electrics". One persons happy with a pendant light and 2 plug sockets. £150 ish. Another wants 8 plugs and 12 down lighters. Maybe £750.

    Kitchens - £1k to £100k. Or more.

Maybe list all the jobs you are thinking of doing. People can help you with putting them in a sensible order. You can then start on quotes, or if you give more info about each task, you might get some ball park figures.

Thanks for the suggestion :) It's a 3-bed terrace, built in 1905, London zone 3. Very rundown in a Steptoe kind of way. All guesstimates would need to include labour costs, as neither of us is able to do much.

    1. Replace flat ground-floor bathroom roof. £2,000?
    2. Sort out guttering and soffits all round. £1,000?
    3. Repointing exterior brickwork including chimney (unsure how much needs doing). DH thinks the main roof is okay. £3,000?
    4. New wiring and sockets throughout. £4,000?
    5. Ornamental original plasterwork largely crumbled away above front door. Replace and paint. £2,000?
    6. Once leaky bathroom roof is fixed, redecorate bathroom and replace shower and possibly the toilet. £1,000?
    7. New kitchen including new boiler and new white goods. £17,000?
    8. Livingroom - replaster ceiling, strip + replaster walls, replace cornices and skirtingboards, repaint, put down something like laminate flooring. £3,000?
    9. Dining room - same as livingroom. £3,000?
    10. Hall, stairs, landing - same as livingroom. £2,000?
    11. Main bedroom - strip polystyrene ceiling tiles, then same as livingroom. New bedroom furniture. £5,000?
    12. Bedroom 2 (much smaller) - same as livingroom. £2,000?
    13. Bedroom 3 (much smaller) - same as livingroom. £2,000?
    14. Replace front porch. £3,000?
    15. Replace back porch - currently corrugated plastic on wooden frame. £1,000?

It's a huge undertaking, given that we'll be living here while it's done bit by bit. I've stuck £51k as a ballpark figure into my spreadsheet, but no real idea if I'm under or overestimating.

In addition, DH has said we should replace the double-glazing throughout the house, so haven't added that into the figures. We've got up to £200k equity in the house at current prices, so would be looking at extending the mortgage. Any rough price guides would be very much appreciated if anyone can help. It's such a mammoth task that I think it would be simpler just to sell for a lower price and move, but DH won't hear of it.

Thanks very much, robatwork - just plugged our details in and we're looking at potentially £60k, not including new double-glazing.

I have to say I found their predictions on the high side in practice.
