Windows 8.1 update

I've been trying for the last couple of days to load the new update for Windows 8.1, mainly because Microsoft have said without it I will not have any more support for 8.1.
I have a Toshiba Satellite c855 laptop, and after the update is installed the system cannot restart, and Toshiba repair cannot do anything except suggest shutting down, or advanced options which include system restore. This I've done 4 times now, and I suspect I'll have to do it again as the download is installing yet again (but very slowly, no progress at all yet). Can anyone suggest ways of getting out of this impasse, or offer any help at all? I'm getting very fed up with it all, I'm beginning to feel too old for this kind of hassle. Thanks, FP

Just leave it run over night and see if it's completed by the morning. Some people have waited a few hours for it to finish. Others, myself included have not topped 50 minutes for it to complete.
Sometimes it can look like it's stuck then it'll jump a big percentage.Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

Thanks for the reply, it has completed 5 times now, I restart the computer, and that's when it all goes to pot. The Toshiba repair program seems to think it's messed up the start, and only by System restore can I get back to my laptop. I've just finished yet another restore! Looks like I shall be trying again later today, I just want it to install and let me use the laptop without restoring.0

I don't know what the "toshiba repair program is" but you could try and manually install the update(s). See.

When you check for Windows Updates, are there any other updates showing as available. If so, install these before attempting to install the big 8.1 Update 1.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0

Did the Toshiba Satellite c855 come with Windows 8 or have you installed it over 7?
Some Tosh systems have had problems with the video drivers in 8.1 unless the manufacture provides updates.

Thanks to everyone, I've finally got it. I downloaded and installed the other updates first, then left the large update to run overnight (thanks, RumRat) and it restarted fine. :j :beer:0

Well at least I have the satisfaction of having provided the solution even if you didn't bother to thank me.... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0
