Barclaycard Fraud check - is it valid?

I have had a series of calls today from an automated number 08453561020 asking me to call back by pressing any key. I simply closed all the calls assuming a scam.
Then I got a text on my cell phone (which is not in the public domain) from Barclaycard using the same 08453561020 number, saying they were doing a fraud check on my Barclaycard and advising I would shortly be getting a text on another number 07537413147 and would need to confirm the recent reported activity was mine.
I checked out the 08453561020 number on Barclays website, fraud team, by typing it in and it reported it was not recognised.
Well the next text did arrive on the 07537413147 number and the activity shown was indeed mine. I was asked to confirm by entering Y + DOB. So I did as I was not asked for either my Barclaycard number or my pin. Then I got a text message back thanking me for the confirmation and saying I could use my card again in 5 minutes. Which suggests it was on hold pending the confirmation.
I have not mislaid my b/card, it is here in front of me. And at no stage was I asked for my barclaycard number or pin number so I am supposing it is genuine.
By why use a strange automated male voice and a number which their main fraud reporting web site says is unrecognised?
Anyone else been round this loop?

Yes, Egg before them, and then Barclaycard (at least that's who they claimed to be) would call me with an automated, computer generated speech message asking me to confirm personal details there and then. I always put the phone down on this type of hypocrisy.0 -
When you actually listen to the phone call they will only really ask for very basic information. For example, it'll give you three months and you have to select which one is your date of birth.0

I googled the mobile number that text you and found a few sites where people have reported the same thing. Many are saying it is legit.
If you are in doubt give Barclays and ring and ask them.0 -
I just received a text from "Barclaycard" that they would send a text from 07537413147 as a fraud check DECLD after a declined transaction. Immediately another text was received from that number, with amount and payee of a declined transaction which was genuine. All it requested was to reply with Y or N to say whether it was okay, which I did.
I then checked by ringing the number on Barclaycard's website and indeed it was genuinely from them.
I am always wary of such texts but this one was asking only for a single character reply, no DOB or other information requested.0 -
I can confirm a similar experience - text from Barclaycard 2 days ago...
'This is Barclaycard, we're doing a Fraud check on your card. Further texts from us will be from 07537413147. DECLD after a transaction means it was declined'
A minute later there was a text from that 07537413147...
'Reply Y if ALL are yours or N if ANY are not'
Followed by a couple of transactions which I didn't recognise so I replied 'N'.
My reply was followed by another text from the 0753 number...
'We've protected your account. We will call you later (standard call charges apply)'
The next morning I had a call from support culminating in the blocking of my card and the issue of a replacement.
So it all seems genuine.0 -

You've got to laugh at the doublespeak - "we've protected your card" :rotfl:0 -

I received a couple of texts on by mobile this morning using the same number as above. Then started to receive automated calls telling to phone 08001512171 which claimed to be their fraud line, but is not listed on the Barclaycard website as such. In fact I started to receive so many calls from this number I installed a call blocker app and blocked it. I then started receiving automated calls on my landline number. I looked up the contact number on the Barclaycard website and contacted them through that. I was a bit dismayed in going through the automated dialling procedure to hear the message say not to use the listed number I was using but to use the number I had been given in the earlier automated call. Right so any scammer can use an automated call and give a fake fraud line to call!
Anyway I continued the call on the listed contact number through to a person and there was indeed a transaction for £1.45 which they had flagged up as suspicious.0 -
I had this this afternoon. Received 2 texts from Barclays as others have described. The second text contained details of 2 correct transactions and one (today) that I did not recognise. As I did not know who sent the text I looked at the Barclays web site and called the customer services number. They put me through to the fraud checking department who said that the text messages were legit texts form Barclays, sent because they had detected a possibly fraudulent transaction. It looks like the transaction I did not recognise was indeed an attempted fraudulent online transaction. No idea how someone can have got my card details. Barclays have cancelled the card and are sending a replacement.
So if you get texts like this, it looks like they may well be from Barclays. If you are not happy replying to the text message, look up Barclays customer service number and call them to check.0 -
They don't ask for your card number, they just ask to answer a question and add you DOB. You can choose to ignore it but your cards won't work until it's sorted.
The irony of Ginger moaning about it is that he would be crying his eyes out if someone spent money on his card and Barclays hadn't tried to prevent it. I to had my card cancelled as they had a large amount of fraudulent transactions, I had no idea, the new card arrived a few days later and I was grateful I didn't have to argue they were not my purchases - as I said I didn't even know it was happening. I have no idea how my card details got into the wrong hands, possibly skimmed, possibly via a hack of a site I'd purchased from, but either way it could have been very annoying.
Some people just like to moan about things as they are very sad and lonely and it makes them feel like they have some power, it's very strange.0
