These days are the same as those days.
The INR is a closed currency - It is illegal to take any into the country.
In practice its easy to get hold of, but you take the chance. I have heard that changes may be on the horizon however.0 -

I have been to India several times.
I've taken Sterling and Rupees in (and out) of the country and I've never been searched. Unless you are talking about thousands then I wouldn't worry about it.
These days I wouldn't bother with transporting currency and I'd just withdraw money from an ATM when I got there. India isn't the backwater that it used to be.0 -
If you are taking a large amount you may be in trouble before you even leave England if you don't declare it to Customs.

They do use dogs that are trained to smell banknotes. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -

Genuinely (and I'm sure you're fully aware) I tend to get a better rate from the black market than my bank. Particularly with USD.
It is usually nailed on the XE rate.0
