Debit cars and credit card fraud same day

I have been informed by HSBC that my credit card and debit card have been had attempted fraudulent activity. The phone call about credit card yesterday and e mail debit card today. Anybody any idea how my ATM and credit card details could have been obtained by the same company. I only use debit card for ATM transactions and cridit card for online transactions, so the 2 have never been seen by anybody ACCEPT HSBC. I have to seriously think these details have been passed on by HSBC staff. Anybody similar experience. I now have a block on my ATM and credit card and I and away on holiday.
HSBC will not comment on how the same company could have got details on both cards.

Thanks

    Do you use online banking?

Or could the attempted fraud have been by someone who had physical access to your cards?

You could have used an ATM machine that was compromised and someone cloned your debit card.
As for the credit card, if you only use it online have you checked your computer for viruses, key loggers etc ? This is one way someone could have got your card details.

    Just to help you out...

Nobody at HSBC will know your PIN. On either of your cards.

So it depends on the nature of the fraud. If it's PIN based - then you need to think if you have told your PIN to anyone and whether you still have both your cards.

If it's 'Card-Not-Present' fraud then could someone have used your card to order goods online. Does the location and type of products ordered make sense e.g. a Harley in San Francisco (unlikely) vs a TV in UK (possible).

The fraud team at HSBC are used to this sort of crime so will be very up on what could have happened.

    Hi Nalak

Did they definitely say that fraud has been attempted with your cards?

Or did they say something like 'your card details may have been compromised'?

If they said something like 'your card details may have been compromised', it could be that they've identified a possible risk, so they're replacing whole batches of cards, 'just in case'.
