I admire your active approach to clearing stuff out. I am prevaricating about starting to clear stuff out and list un-necessary possessions but I know it has to be done - along with the filing boxes that need sorting through. The GCHQ Puzzle book is far more appealing at the moment though, even if it makes me feel a bit stupid!

Cheers SL - we got rid of another bag of unsuitable baby clothes, a couple of unused toys and some blankets etc. thanks to a charity collection this morning :)

DD currently napping after a woeful nights sleep, I think she is suffering from this nasty persistent coughing bug that is doing the rounds. She went down at 21:00 and was back up at 06:30, despite being up for at least 2 hours during the night. Currently rolling around her cot hacking her guts up :(

Still, since she has my attention, I have paid the rest of her pocket money for 2017 into my S&S ISA  She is one wealthy wee sausage compared to her parents, who are both feeling completely skint now :rotfl:

It's such a worry isn't it? we used to give DS Medised (withdrawn) which was pretty marvellous being a paracetamol suspension with a little bit of anti-histamine so it dried up Mr Snotface and made him a little bit sleepy so we all got a bit of rest.

Plan B was glycerol with honey and lemon with a decongestant rub like Vicks or an olbas oil caplet on a hankie to shift the mucus. Sounds as though DD is already shifting it. Better out than in. Still horrible though.

A very warm bath with lots of steam helps too with a bit of olbas oil dripped in and has the advantage that it leaves them sleepy (especially after she has dozed all day... I guess it is just that time of year. DM (south of Glasgow) said it was too cold to garden today so I know you are quite a lot colder than we are.

Last night was even worse, awake from 00:30-04:00 :(

She is currently getting a decongestant rub, paracetamol, glycerol and a plug in decongestant when we have refills for it. She also ended up having 3 bottles last night. Absolutely scunnered.

Who is DM? Poster, or relative? We are also in the South of Glasgow, have been for roughly 12 of the last 14 years :)

Sorry to hear that. Not surprised you are shattered. From what you said before Christmas you are at least, still off work (me too). I remain hopeful that all pre-Christmas coughing and spluttering will have improved before I resume my commute into London next week. It affects the seats I take on the train. I have adopted aircraft-style rather than f2f for the winter to reduce the likelihood of being coughed or sneezed over (I know, it is sad)

DM is Darling Mother. Sorry, the abbreviations don't always carry between threads. Mine is South of Glasgow - in East Ayrshire and Sis and family near Troon.

I hope that was the worst of it and she is starting to improve

    Hi Ed

Sorry you had a rotten Christmas - similar here so sympathise - DH had the sickness bug and Christmas was delayed a couple of days. He was pretty poleaxed for the rest of the holiday, but we managed to do a couple of things and I managed to escape coming down with it.

How nice for you to go back to your roots - I like doing similar things, but it can be upsetting sometimes aswell as lovely.

In a way I was glad you hadn't been posting much as it meant I could catch up quite quickly - but hope to see you on a little more often.

    Hope DD is better soon.

    All the best for 2017.

Happy New Year Ed, sounds like it has been a tough one. Sorry to hear DD is suffering, and like Bagpuss you will also be suffering. I noticed you mentioned that you used a plug-in decongestant when you have the refills for it. When DS was small I also had one of those and when the refill ran out I dripped a few drops of Olba5 oil onto it and plugged it back in. Not as good as a fresh one but not bad either. Maybe worth a try? Hope she is sleeping better soon.

Thanks SHS, all 3 of us had it in the end, memorable Christmas for all the wrong reasons!
Mine was pretty depressing this year, it has to be said, my brother and I sitting in our mother's house looking at the With Sympathy cards :( My brother's eldest daughter in law made up for it with Boxing Day revels with two small children and so much food we needed to leave the table between courses so she could re-set :) it was quite something.
Never rely on 'family assets' until they become your assets (along the lines of not counting chickens until they hatch)! ;)
Absolutely. I was very squeaky when I retired, though I still knew it was worth it - now that I *have* inherited, I know that I'll only sell my own house to downsize if I *want* to. I won't *need* to, and that makes all the difference.

I've been back to family areas too over this holiday period - some of them are still nice, some of them very dodgy, and at one stage I had to prove I used to be a local, because I was taking photographs in the street, people don't like that in Liverpool _pale_

Sorry your little DD is still unwell, hope she's bouncing again soon.

Ed (and anyone else who is suffering)

one of my colleagues gave me a bizarre suggestion which works for me, cover the soles and tops of your feet with vick$ and put a pair of socks on before you go to bed. I was awake for hours coughing and that did the trick, don't knock it until you've tried it no matter how weird it sounds!

I'd like to be here more often. I think I was pretty low for much of 2016, bit off a lot more than I can chew with the house and work has been pants as well. I'm slowly getting back up to speed and am catching up with the diaries. I was nearly a year out of date digesting yours, although I always kept an eye out for your many updates :)

I am truly sorry to hear that KC, although young children and spending time with the rest of the family really can help to lift the spirits.

I can understand re. Liverpool, certain TV channels seem to make it their business to paint Liverpudlians as unflattering stereotypes and caricatures of themselves!

Thanks ajm, I had heard that one before, DD's sniffle is greatly improved, although she's still not sleeping well. Muy clingy!

Thanks for the suggestion Chickadee, it's a good one, refills cost something disgusting like £6. Parents are a captive audience. I was surprised that there wasn't a generic/compatible refill, or that someone hadn't come up with a good value plug in that would let you just use essential oils of your own choosing. I imagine that would be quite a good seller, design your own fragrance/mood sort of thing.
