Sorry to hear that, Ed - a lumpy playing field is something thats really difficult for an individual to overcome :(

Is there any way to *get* the sort of experience that the external candidates have? Or is that a Catch 22?

Catch 22 I'm afraid KC. Was offered the opportunity to practice/develop some of the skills in addition to my current job, but it was the 'soft' stuff that would be of very little use to my career development and of lots of use to them in terms of not paying someone to help out with extra work ;)

I'm not feeling very charitable, I find that a f-t job, a house and a baby are more than enough to focus on at present.

I feel that I could get the same job elsewhere (say local government), but that it wouldn't come with the pay jump that I had hoped for. If I'm honest, for the same money, I'll stick to the devil I know and keep my head down in my current role. Then again, local government would mean career average pension, which would free up a lot of money for other things.

Sorry about the job - does seem a shame to offer it internally and externally and then pick an external candidate, you'd think they'd want to foster growth with existing employees first.

Yes, ironically a large part of the job was mentoring existing employees to help them develop their skillsets by applying a range of analytical tools :rotfl:

    Ha - even better!

I've never run a company/been a boss, so I'm sure it's harder than I think it would be, but it seems like the basic stuff (respecting your employees, communicating clearly/transparently, encouraging your employees to better themselves) is pretty...basic. Unless internal employee pool is massively worse than external employee pool, I think you should always try and hire from within, if only to foster employee loyalty. (Maybe I'm overestimating the cost to lose/acquire new employees, though?)

It's ok, I wasn't the right person on the day, perfectly happy that I gave it a good shot :j

Could you not start a course to work towards becoming an IFA whilst you are working at the current job? From my (well parents' really) dealings with one, they have industry specific qualifications. It would perhaps be worth studying for the qualifications so you're job ready in 3 years time rather than just starting as Mrs Ed goes full time.

Surely the potential career average pension is only relevant if you stay within local government?

Yes Alex, that had been the plan when we moved house, I very quickly came to realise how much effort goes into renovating (even when contractors are doing at least 50% of the work). I could realistically start down that path in a year or so.

Career average pensions are quite powerful actually (even for short spells). I transferred in a tiny defined contribution to the central government pension scheme where I worked for 2 years. This little pot is worth 6-7 years of contributions in my current (better remunerated) post.

I am off next week to finish all of our gloss painting. Planning on getting carpets fitted next weekend and having a skip turn up midweek so that I can empty the garage and secure a tarp over the leaking asbestos cement tile roof. Oh the fun I have :rotfl:

Sorry to hear about the job  What is it with these companies that they don't value their existing staff. I was asked to take on some extra responsibilities which would help me secure a permanent contract this September. But yep, you've guessed it, I still have the extra responsibilities but no permanent contract is forthcoming (or any extra money to reflect the extra responsibilites). Why am I not even surprised :rotfl:

That is rotten. Our place are masters at that particular trick (and they wonder why our turnover is relatively high!)
