hi
i have a black & decker 12V drill. i was trying to add drill couple of holes in wooden battens bought from timberyard.
i charged battery fully and used wood drill bit but it just wont work. drill will go in maybe half a cm and then it keeps spinning but wont drill any deeper? i tried adjusting speed up and down but it wont work.
do i need a new drill? if so any recommendations for around £50/£70. i have a SDS for brick walls in house (have tried couple of hammer drills from friends but exterior facing walls or my house are simply too strong for hammer drills. SDS is quite heavy and difficult to use but at least i can drill holes in brick walls!)

If the drill (the bit) is spinning it sounds as if you need to tighten it up in the chuck.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

If the drill is turning but not going through the wood it sounds like the drill itself is fine, but your drill bits are blunt - get a new set of wood ones - should only cost you £10.

Yeah if the drill is spinning then it's doing its job.
Sounds like the drill bit is blunt.0 -
Or going the wrong directionBe happy...;)0

+1 for check how sharp the bit is.
If it rotates, the drill is fine, but if it doesn't 'cut', then check the bit.0 -

Or check it is going the right direction, the groves are ducts to remove waste.
If it is in reverse it will stop drilling once the tip is in.Be happy...;)0 -
thanks. i checked and it is going in right direction. will try to get some new drill bits and try.
any recommendations for an upgrade of drill?0 -

Any brand of drill is only as fine as yours. Replace when it breaks or isn't powerful enough for your purpose
If you can't get the drill through timber and it is still running full speed and not stalling or slipping in the chuck then there are only 4 possibilities;
It's running backwards, (covered)
Your drills are blunt, (covered)
You aren't lifting to clear the crude from the drill bit,
You need more spinach:A:A:A:A;);)I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
If the drill bit is spinning around in the hole, then there's nothing wrong with the drill.
Another thing to check is that you haven't hit something really solid - such as a big nail in the wood.If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -
It may be the drill bit is getting clogged - take it out when it starts spinning, knock it on the work bench to clear the grooves and then carry on.0
