How do people afford to run petrol cars? (or how nasty are courtesy cars lol)

Just bought a new 307cc for my wife, which shares that service interval. I agree with you that 20k is too long between oil changes; ours will be done more often than that. However, as a *slight* defence to Peugeot, they do provide a free "inspection" at 1yr/10k, to check the major items.
I really must stop loafing and get back to work...

I run a diesel Omega on rapeseed frying oil from the cash and carry. I mix it 50:50 with diesel to be on the safe side. Makes the fuel 2/3 of the proper price, and supports european farmers, good for the environment too, as growing the crops absorbs more pollution than burning the oil derived. The engine is quieter more like a petrol. It has done over 50,000 miles and runs beautifully (BMW 6 cylinder engine)
    Good luck!

Does this really work? I thought it bunged the engine up over time!

This method of running a car really needs to be seriously looked at for the future. Obviously fuel cells are the way forward, but bigger vehicles are going to need more grunt, and running vans and other commercial vehicles at least on veggie oil has to be a good thing for the environment.

Only problem I have with it is I live out in the sticks, and the damn rapeseed plants give me stinking hayfever, not pleasant :(

jjames - I actually ensure I have it serviced at about 12,000 miles to be on the safe side - so far so good, and I have had it 2.5 yrs. (touch wood, touch wood!).
"It was not my intention to do this in front of you. For that, I'm sorry. But you can take my word for it, your mother had it comin'."

It is illegal though. Lets face it if you are going to get done by Customs and Excise for VAT fraud, and have invalid insurance to boot, why not use red diesel? Simple just get an old central heating oil tank (£50 off ebay) and get heating oil delivered from memory about 9p a litre. Will work perfectly just add some veg oil or Millers diesel addative to ensure the the pump if lubricated.

The big advantage to this is that its undetectable unless the tank is dipped. You can smell a veg running car some distance away and it can be difficult to start in the winter.

Costco best price around here though 44p ltr. My TDi would run 95% veg in the summer and was better for it.
