Non payment of SDLT by solicitor

I have been hit by a non payment of SDLT letter despite paying the full amount to a solictor who then declared a lesser house value and pocketed the extra. The solicitor has since been closed down and I want to find out what options I have as it seems terribly unfair as I have paid the full amount once and now the Inland Revenue want an extra £2000 plus interest. I understand that a lot of home owners have been fiddled by their solicitor and I think we should have some right to reply. Anyone else had this problem and found a non cost solution.

Posts #2 and 3 are correct.
But you also need to explain all this to HMRC which has power to waive SDLT in appropriate circumstances. If you do have to pay it, do that asap to avoid/minimise interest and penalties.
