Stupid question - when did you last check the tyre pressures...?
  • To check the shocks - stand at each corner of the car and push down and let go. the car should come back up to the normal position. If the car bounces after you have let go take it to your local mech.

As above people have said, check wheel nuts are on tight and the tyre pressures are correct.

    Thanks for all your replies.
Got wheel nuts and tyre pressures checked...all are fine.
Think it might be the shocks.
Is it dangerous to drive the car,as I do need to use it over the weekend for work? Are things likely to "break" suddenly if I continue to use it?
Will defo leave it in to garage on Tuesday morning though.

And nobody has mentioned getting the wheels balanced and the tracking checked. Order of business should be: check tyre pressures, tyre condition, wheel balance and wheel tracking at a tyre centre. Whilst there have disc, pad and brake shoes checked and brake cylinders checked for leaks. If car is over 3 years [as it clearly is] visually inspect brake pipes. This is to find your juddering and any performance issues around braking. Check damper operation yourself by bouncing each corner of the car - it should settle within one bounce. One silly thing I have previously encountered is the adverse effect than can be felt having driven through gravel / stones and picked up stuff in around the shoes and pads. When the car is jacked to balance wheels etc also get it checked for bearing play. All this will only get expensive once the fault is found. There are some pretty awful MOT test centres around which can easily miss obvious faults so I would recommend reading the MOT advice on the main site here.
Life is like a box of chocolates - drop it and the soft centres splash everywhere

By your own admission the handling is now unpredictable, so that obviously "up's the ante" in the potential accident stakes.

First thing I'd be checking is the rear trailing arm bushes, especially as they are a common failure item.
Highly unlikely that anything is going to suddenly "break", worst case scenario is that it will end up chewing the living daylights out of your tyres in a very short space of time if it is the bushes.
Understeer is when you hit a wall with the front of your car
Oversteer is when you hit a wall with the back of your car
Horsepower is how fast your car hits the wall
Torque is how far your car sends the wall across the field once you've hit it
