EDF Back Billing

Hi
I'm just looking for a bit of advice. I received a bill from EDF in December with electricity back billed to October 2010. They have credited by account with around £200 as they say they take into account payments that I made. I calculated that the charges older than a year before the billing date amount to around £700. This bill left me around £800 in debit. Is it right that they don't simply refund what has been billed rather than the amount less payments made?
it is 100% their mistake and I have had conversations in the past to query whether I was paying enough and how much I should br paying individually for gas and electric.
any advice?

Back billing rule is here

But yes, in short, it simply protects a customer from receiving a demand for payment for energy consumed over 12 months previously but not billed because of an error by the supplier.
The supplier can use payments already made by the customer to offset anything owed, even if it was their fault and is over 12 months ago.0 -
Are you saying you have not been billed until recently since 2010?
Or is this a catch up bill because of previously estimated readings, in which case that would also complicate matters. (although it can be argued the supplier should be trying to read the meter at least every 2 years, and in the case of gas, must do so)0 -
Thanks for the replies. These charges are all new and only came to light on the most recent bill. The bill shows estimates fpr each period determined I believe by changes in tariff. I'm fairly sure I've given them readings on at least one occasion and I know it's been read independently also. They simply say they didn't bill me but haven't said why!
Is there not a case to say if they'd billed me correctly I would have adjusted my DD to cover it; in fact they've reduced my monthly payments in the past!0 -
Back billing by edf. Just recieved a bill for the last 12 months from the wonderful (sarcastic) EDF energy having applied the 'billing code'. Because I had paid a direct debit for the four months previous to the last 12 months they have taken that from me also now leaving me in £350 pounds of debt. Everything has been done by me during this time to secure a bill and submit a bill, but its taken them 18 months to realise that the engineer who came to our house deregistered the meter. Absolutely shocked by EDF s incompetence during this matter. Any advice to this is appreciated as in my mind the back billing code is irrelevant in my case as I was paying prior to the 12 month period.0
