Tenancy query

My partner and i are looking at a new property but are unsure if we will be able to move anytime soon as we still have a tenancy on our current property.

We currently have a 6 month assured short-hold tenancy. The tenancy started in July 2013 but we haven't re-signed it and the 6 months have passed.

My question is, does the tenancy "roll over" without the need for us to re-sign it every 6 months or do we technically not have a valid tenancy agreement anymore allowing us to move out without breaking the agreement?

Any help would be much appreciated!

You have "Statutory Period Tenancy" which runs month to month.

You must give a months notice ending with a tenancy period.

Ending/Renewing an AST (what happens when the Fixed Term ends?)(What is a Periodic Tenancy?)(How can a LL remove a tenant?)(How can a tenant end a tenancy?)

That's all true IF (but only if):
    a. the property's in England & Wales; and
    b. the letting is within the Housing Act 1988- not all are!

And if the tenancy was indeed a fixed term tenancy, which it likely is, but might be defined otherwise.

    Long time no see, btw.

Seems pretty clear this was a 6 month Fixed Term.
If Scotland, it would be a SAT, not an AST (though I accept ignorance of the N Ireland equivelant).

OK - 1 in a 1000 chance it is not now a SPT....

Are you buying a property or looking at moving from one rental place to another ?
You hopefully ( see posts above !) Have a standard 6 months AST which after the six months rolled onto a periodic tenancy.
IF ? this is what has happened then you need to give one calendar months notice to LINE UP with the start date when you moved in ie the 1st of the month.
The Landlord needs to give you two months notice.
This must be done in writing and it would be wise to send two copies from different post offices with proof of posting ( not recorded )
Posting a few days before to allow time for delivery.
If you are buying do not jump the gun by giving notice before you have exchanged on the property !
Better to be paying rent for an extra week or two than be homeless for 2/3 weeks.
