LA Fitness - no answer

Following their instructions, I called today cancel my membership which expired on the 30th of April. I have phoned three times today and ended up in a queue that each time just continues to ring:
12:52 no answer
20:46 no answer
07:03 no answer
I have also sent an email to their Member Support <member.support@lafitness.co.uk> which informs me that I might not hear back for 10 days at busy times.
So I have cancelled my direct debit - if they cannot respond to my calls, I might end up with additional costs according to:
11.B AFTER THE INITIAL TERM
11.3 You may cancel your Contract on one month’s notice at any time after the Initial Term, but your notice shall only take effect on the first day of the month following our receipt of your request to cancel (see 11.4) during which time you shall be able to continue to use the Services.
So I feel the need to make sure that they cannot take further monies until they contact me.
Any advice on this?

edit: Turns out that their non-0844 number just forwards to a dead queue. Dialled the correct one and straight through. Issue dealt with
