Can they do that?!

I just tried to purchase a remnant of fabric in a high street store. The handwritten label on the packet said '£30 reduced to £15'. When I took it to the till to pay the assistant told me that it had been wrongly marked up and should have been £28.50. I protested that they should have sold it for the amount displayed on the packaging but was told that they would not do that & did not have to. Is that correct?? Thanks!

Correct, they do not have to sell it at the marked price. http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/wales/consumer_w/consumer_protection_for_the_consumer_e/consumer_contracts_e/consumer_contracts_whats_meant_by_offer_acceptance_and_consideration.htmThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. yes, they can do that unless the law has changed since I retired from retail.
it seems unfair I know.
I believe this applies to individually priced items - I was taught that in Epos stores they have to sell it to you for the price displayed on the shelf (the ticket should be the same barcode as the item). but, that may have just been company policy of the stores I worked at.0
