My husband has always snored, whether on his front, back or side but over the last year it's been awful... He's just had a hernia repair and the snoring has gone completely :T

Not very helpful to others from a money saving point of view but has amazed me!

So consensus seems to be, visit your GP and get referred. As snoring always has an underlying medical cause

I have been snoring for 10 years, after trying several things including, nose strip, gum shield and spray, I came across a tip in a newspaper survey. The reporter claimed that putting a towel over your head and breathing in steam with 3 -4 drops of inhalant in boiling water worked. I have tried this and while I have not been cured of snoring It has helped my wife get some sleep. After doing this for several nights in a row. I now only do this following a bad night.

I swapped my pillow for an old thin (1" ish) foam one -works like magic for me (so my wife says!).

Sometimes just losing weight can help prevent snoring. Snoring, especially where breathing is interrupted, can cause tiredness during the day or it could indicate a serious condition.

I agree, my husband used to snore a lot but since losing weight he hardly ever does. Now it's just when he's had a few too many beers!

Lose weight. (Money-saving because you eat less and drink less (alcohol and sugary drinks)! Might not be if you opt for expensive gyms or weight loss clubs, but that might be of more value at least.)

Most of my snoring was caused by obesity... not to put too fine a point on it, all the fat on the back of your throat gets in the way and vibrates when you breathe. It tailed off (according to my snoring recording app) as I sank into the mid to lower "overweight" part of the BMI range.

Allergies are another cause, which make the back of my throat itch and cause a sort of instinctive grunting.... antihistamines (hay fever tablets) help me there, and there's a cheap hay fever tablets article on the MSE site.

I saw something on the BBC a few months ago which said that singing the sounds Ung and Gar can reduce snoring. Apparently these sounds strengthen the throat muscles.

My other half snores, especially after a few drinks. We tried all sorts of different mouth and nose sprays, I have found that the best thing that works is a good pair of earplugs for me... I got the "Snore Calm ELITE Foam Ear Plugs" which are pretty good and much more sound proof than the ones you get free on airplanes etc.

My wife swears by the wax earplugs from Boots.
