Are surgery deposits refundable?

I'm guessing that the answer is no!
Someone at work confided in me yesterday that when she was 18, she went for a breast enlargement consultation. They were really encouraging, and told her that she definitely needed the boost, and that they'd help her feel like a woman. She handed over a £500 deposit on the day, via DC.
She couldn't afford to pay the rest, and two weeks before her surgery, they cancelled due to an unpaid balance.
She was saying that it's the biggest waste of money that she's ever done, and that she wished she hadn't been talked into handing over a deposit straight away. This was nearly five years ago now, so it's probably too late in this case, but could she have tried to get the money back?

They can be refundable, but the service provider is entitled to retain an amount for their expenses incurred, and any loss of opportunity. They may struggle to find someone to fill her appt at such a late time, and hence be entitled to retain her deposit for that reason. I think she'll struggle to get evidence to the contrary after such a long time.0

Yes, she could have tried. Whether she would have succeeded in getting any of the £500 back is questionable.0

Oh and £500 is not a lot in terms of wasting....my wife has probably spent more in nail varnish in the last five years!0

Actually I wish it was just £500...you'd think there would be enough nail varnish to buy in the UK. Nope, she's now importing it from the USA!
She assures me it's cheaper!? Is she conning me?
What brand is she buying?
After trying lots of brands I found that Chanel lasts the longest for me. It's now about £20/bottle so I crossed the £500 line a long time ago. Apparently some of my old limited edition ones and those that have been discontinued could be worth quite a bit. Who knew that nail polish could be an investment!0
