Did you pay the plumber to look at the house? My "armchair lawyer" belief is that tradespeople can't be liable if you're not paying them for a survey as there isn't any contract between you. (If they were liable in such situations, then they wouldn't be willing to give an opinion for free.)0

When I moved into my house with lead pipes, my dad (a plumber) said it was pointless changing them as the pipes leading up to my house would probably be lead anyway. Lazy though my father is, I do believe that if there were any risk to me and his granddaughter he would have been very quick to change them indeed.0
