I downloaded this software without a problem but found it a no better than AVG anti virus (also free) http://free.grisoft.com/ which I have used for many years.

Decided today to remove McAfee System Mechanic from my PC, geez what a programme this is to remove.

I tried all ways but couldn't uninstall it.

In the end I had to search the internet and found a removal tool at PCpitstop.

I'll be sticking to the trustworth AVG.

wrexy33 - AVG is only an anti virus program

system mechanic is NOT an anti virus program.

There are three main areas when you open the software the majority of the sub software is on the left hand pane there are lots of little programs in each of the list on that side such as

    increase internet speed
    speed up hard dirves
    memory mechanic
    popup blocker
    manage windows start up
    system customiszer
    manage running programs
    junk file removal tool
    uninstall software
internet clean up and privacy tool
    duplicate file inspector
    repair and clean the registry
    find and remove spyware
    dirve and system problems
    fix broken shortcuts
    fix security vulnerabilities
    permanently delete files
    automatic system protection
    track windows changes
    schedule tasks
    system info report
    download updates
    relocate software
    inspect and undo changes
    pc total care
    pc cleanup
    pc accesslorator
    pc security optimizer
    pc repair
(also the scans in the middle pane)

some of these have arrows next to the tools and have further options some are a bit too advanced for me so i use the basic level on some of the tools.

You just cant get this in a FREE program, it is on offer until 19th july as someone pointed out earlier.

i have a friend who uses avg, system mechanic alerted them that the reg details for the avg software had ran out and that avg hadn't told him of this, hence he had no ANTI VIRUS cover.

So this software saved him from any potential danger of a virus attack, and him thinking that he was ok.

i use spybot, ad aware & the microsoft spyware one but they are primarily for spyware they are not there to sort out your pc like system mechanic, no ONE product is capable of picking up ALL spyware, i have learnt this over the last 11 years, so you need to have several spyware sf installed.

i would say if you had a problem with installing any software in general, it could mean that you havent defragged and completed the other types of maintenance that a computer requires often enough, and sometimes you need to do a hard drive wipe, and windows reinstall if your pc is not in any better shape due to not carrying out required maintenance. System mechanic installs two files for when you start up your pc and these run in the background, all the more reason to try and defrag etc before installation i always do some maintenance before i install software to limit the possibilities of installation problems, and always reboot afterwards. i dont know your level of pc maintenenace understanding so i'm guessing here.

i dont know about the uninstall issue as i havent done that so far.

as far as i know it is not a mcafee product it just mentions IOLO TECHNOLOGIES and thats the name on the website too.

also for Anti Virus i would recommend NOD32 i have been using it for about 2/3 years it is way better than the likes of mcafee and norton and doesn't hog the memory.

it was voted best anti virus product 2006 and i certainly can vouch for it it also installs a program in outlook express so you can check your messages for viruses.

    Slenderkitten.

    Your are indeed correct.

I'm sorry but I have made a major error here and posted to the wrong thread.
I recently downloaded System Mechanic ..... but also McAfee software from this thread http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=490900&highlight=natwest+%26amp%3B+software
And it is to that thread that I should have posted the above.

    I am sorry.
Maybe a moderator could move my post to the correct thread or remove it entirely.

    Sorry for the confusion.
And thanks Slenderkitten for posting such an informative post.
I'll take your comments regarding AVG on board and give NOD32 a try again.

    Regards

    +1 for NOD32

though Kaspersky and Steganos (basically same but cheaper than Kaspersky) are also rated very highly indeed

I got this bit of software when it was on the forum last time and I must say you really don't get many better freebies than this one. A truly superb find............:j :j  :T :T
No reliance should be placed on the above.
