Eon chasing incorrect bill for previous property

I sold my property in December 2013, having moved out two months earlier. The gas and electricity were still connected but very little used in the interim.

Both accounts were with Eon.

I made numerous calls to them between October and December, informing them of the move, unfortunately as there was so much going on (house sales being as they are, incredibly stressful) I didn't note every single call. I did phone them with meter readings in the week of my move.

The electricity account seems to have been settled and closed properly - I didn't query or check the bill, just paid it - but I received a large estimated bill for the gas. I tried to sort this out with numerous telephone calls (from my mobile), repeatedly telling them the key fact that the property changed hands on a date in December.

This week I have received another large bill addressed to me at this address, but including gas usage for January.

I also noted two calls from Eon had been made to my mobile.

I wrote Eon a sharp email via their website explaining that I had moved out, they hadn't recorded the meter reading and I no longer had it, and I would like them to stop harassing me and sort out their mistakes.

They replied that they would rebill if I could supply a meter reading, however, if I could not supply a meter reading, the "final bill" (which includes charges for December and January) would stand.

What to do? I really want this company out of my life, they were annoying enough for the time I was with them.

The new residents have changed their supplier to British Gas; I am trying to find out the date of the changeover but they are even busier and were stressed than I was with the whole move thing, they certainly didn't have a meter reading (I asked).

Thanks.

    Good morning billsters,

This is a bit difficult really, we can close the gas account to the actual date you moved out, we can change this no problem. Especially as we've closed the electricity to correct date already.

But, if we don't have a final meter reading to use to produce the final bill, we'll have to use an estimate :(

We can have a look at the new occupiers account to see if they did supply a read when they moved in, then we can use this to close your account to.

But if not, we're going to be stuck with an estimate I'm afraid.

Please let me know if you'd like me to have a look at your account for you, I'll be happy to try and help.

    Helena :)

Not good enough Helena, I gave them a reading, they lost it. They're sending me bills as though no conversation took place then or subsequently. And they're still chasing for gas used in December and January. Taking it to Ombudsman.

It's not about the money with me now, they were crap suppliers, bombarding me with junk mail, and they're still hanging about in my life.

Did you enter the gas and electricity readings on line? or email?

    Are either bill annotated 'FINAL'

However if you 'didn't query or check the(electricity) bill, just paid it' you presumably wouldn't know? Also you don't know if that was to the correct date??

Yes, I let the electricity one go, but the gas was so obviously wrong and not marked FINAL, and the debt collection agency who have just written are threatening disconnection.

My wife gets really annoyed with me because I keep billing, payment and even meter info for at least 6 years but it has solved several potential problems when billing has gone awry.
Unfortunately if you don't keep records then it's nigh on impossible to sort it out and you leave yourself at the mercy of the supplier. All you can hope is that the new occupiers have been a bit more diligent than you and that they sent in up to date reads when they took over and that the supplier will be prepared to try and correlate them with when you left, however if they didn't send in reads
you are probably stuffed and will be paying for their gas.

Its no good phoning in your readings in the week of your move. you note the readings as you shut the front door for the last time when you are completely through with using energy whatsoever. You are expecting the incoming occupier to make good your little bit of unpaid energy. Its also not needed to be warning Eon of your future intentions about moving house. We dont come out to perform closing reads of properties anymore. Its the occupiers job to simply grab the readings as they exit the front door and inform customer services of their end reads and forwarding address. Also its your job to get the readings of the new property, as you move in, and register the account with existing supplier. Its easy really.

In this day and age of smart phones & digital cameras, why oh why don't people take pictures of the meters on their last & first days of occupancy? Someone in the family must surely have a smart phone or digital camera? A couple of minutes of someones time could save so much more time and effort further down the line.

A revised bill arrived by this morning's post. It's estimated and way too high but I'm going to pay it just to get them out of my hair.

The new owners switched to British Gas and presumably there was a crossover period but .. I've lost the will on this.

If the meter reading does show up at this end, I will pursue it.

Anyone dealing with EON - keep records and don't expect them to be competent.

Thanks for helpful comments, btw.
