PPI Claim...but not as we know it

Hi there, I have never taken PPI with any loan or credit card (as far as I know anyway!), but about 9 years ago I took out a secured loan with Sterling Credit who then became Beneficial Finance and were owned by HFC Bank.
I don't have all the details to hand but I was told at the time that if I didn't take PPI with the loan, I would have to pay a higher interest rate. The higher rate was still competetive so I agreed to go ahead. I've sinced paid off the loan when I moved house but I wondered if I might have a claim at all?
