What do you use to clean garden with dogs?

I have 2 male dogs and while one mainly does his wees and poos on walks the other only ever wants to go in the garden. I clear up every day and wash it down but I noticed this morning there is a definite pee smell outside. I am worried that obviously with warmer weather hopefully coming this will get worse and not only will it be unpleasant for me but for my neighbour too.

I have a very large paved patio with a fence 3 sides of it. I think the dogs are peeing up the fence which is holding the smell.

I used to use Jeyes fluid which I found really good but have recently found out that it has caused the death of a few dogs so am not willing to risk using it.

What do other dog owners use to clean their gardens?

I use Mistral kennel disinfectant - at home and in the kennels where I work. It comes in lots of different scents but we have found the lavander to be most effective.

You need to hose down regularly too - I have 11 large dogs so have to do it every day. My sister has connected her bathroom downpipe to a water butt and uses that in a watering can to do her paved area as she is on a meter :money:.

I also have a large garden sprayer filled with a solution of Mistral that I use to spray down the fence/walls where the males have peed.

Crommesol is also very good (but more expensive than Mistral).

    Hope this helps :).

Thanks for that Frugalista. Can I ask where you buy the disinfectant?

Yes, I am washing down the patio every day and possibly in the summer may need to do it twice a day. We are on a meter though so will have to try and be as economical with the water as possible.

I use Odor-kill available Animal Health - you can get it from them here:- http://animal-health.co.uk/animals/dog/odor-kill.html). It's very effective (used it when we had 9 dogs! and 15 cats!) and now with one dog and two females, it is very effective in keeping the driveway smell free!

    Here you go -

    - this is the premium product that we use - I have no idea about the efficiency of the standard product though.

For homemade solutions, biological washing powder can be a good one. White vinegar or lemon juice (white vinegar works out cheaper for patios etc. - you can buy in 5l bottles from oriental supermarkets, cash & carry, etc) will work on urine odours too.
