It's not quite as easy as just ringing a bank up and saying "can I have a merchant account please".
You have to prove you are a business, have a business bank account, eveidence of trading - such as suppliers invoices etc. and an impeccable credit history.
Worldpay may well be the easiest way of starting out, you can have internet merchant status and a virtual terminal without having to have a normal merchant account with an aquiring bank.
They have a special offer on at the moment, but, you probably have to have an e-commerce website to have an account with them.
try the worldpay website for all the info.
I've just signed up for streamine/secpay, the amount of paperwork was unbelievable, even though we already have a standard merchant account with cardnet.
