Help required with Orange network

Hi, Up until Xmas 2013 I was with Orange on a contract for over 3 yrs, never missed a payment, left them went to new provider, all hunky dory.
then yesterday out of the blue I got a letter saying I owe £11.48 I rang them today to pay and they refused to take payment saying they have already passed it on to debt collecting agency, and to top it off the woman I spoke to was extremely rude. I said I was happy to pay the £11.48 , that I want a bill to prove it and that I wont deal with any debt agency as they haven't given me reasonable time to pay this, I was told they had sent me 4 previous letters which I (for whatever reason) have not had, she went on to say that if I don't deal with the debt agency it would affect my credit rating in the future and I cant blame Orange for that if it does !
Any help much appreciated as to what I should do now, my plan is to send a cheque to Orange, I haven't heard from the Debt agency at all , thanks
Thanks
