    Hi Mike

Please don't be put off by some people on here.... many are self claimed experts who have biased views (many are residential property investors, buy to let in particular). They are also very happy to remain 100% anonymous and will not give away even minor vague personal information to substantiate their self proclaimed expertise, such as education, career background....

The irony of you, with your username, complaining about anonymty of others.

I've posted all of this before, but here goes again...

Rates trader, in investment banking, bachelors and masters in physics from Oxford, doctorate in high energy physics from London.

Now, please be so kind as to fill in the details for you, along with a succinct explanation of why you believe this makes you better informed.

Do nothing and sooner or later have another crash

I find your underlying assertion that 'crashes' can be banished from the Human journey, intensely optimistic.

What to you expect a one way road to prosperity without any bumps along the way? Impossible.

We're still very rich compared with most in the world - we have reliable electricity and water, a safe state, free education, fee healthcare, sewerage, decent roads very low crime etc.

Lets sometimes stop being so darned spoilt.

Just look at historical posts and you can read between the lines to work out where they are coming from.... and also the clique of people on here that thank each others posts.

I've always thought that you were a bit of a thanker ;)

Thank you very much for repeating yourself to let us know your background, I have a lot of respect for you. I'm also a scientist, but I'm still in the field of science so have much less knowledge than people such as yourself. My request for indications of posters backgrounds was not at yourself, but those people towards the later end of this thread. I have also posted about myself and background many times, but I have never claimed in any of my posts to be an expert, I have even stated on my post sign off that I am here on this forum to learn and debate.

Aberdeen... indeed as most poeple, I can be a bit of a thanker every now and then lol

Scratched record matey..... to correct you... I have never mentioned financial conspiracy and your hint that I'm some Russian communist sympathiser is laughable :-)

BillJones - I sincerely hope that others will follow by your example and make their position in the housing market and background/ education/career clear to all. However, I do not detect even a hint a stampede to follow you.... I think Antrobus is at the back of that queue.
    Peace.

  • I studied to degree level in molecular genetics which is a big sector now, but 18 yrs ago there were not enough jobs in it. So I moved into analytical chemistry pharma sector and stayed there mostly... moving into method validation and development. Now I've ended up developing a completely novel technology to test for toxins in food, a uni spin out that is now a commercial company. To be successful developing a novel technology takes a broad skill set across many disciplines so my biology and chemistry sides have really helped.
    Peace.

It's perhaps best, then, not to form too strong an opinion on what is a pretty complex subject.

I view many on here pontificating on the evils of investment banking about the same as you'd probably view Jenny McCarthy holding forth on toxins in food, or Deepak Chopra telling the engineers at CERN what they are doing wrong. For some reason, though, a great many people with no knowledge of the inside of an investment bank seem willing to offer insight based on what they read in the press.

    It's all a bit bizarre.
  • I think the challenge to be faced by industry experts then is explaining why they got it so wrong. If such a catastrophe happened in say Engineering or Chemistry there would be analysis and corrective actions, whereas what most observed was the political classes bail out banks whilst applying austerity to the masses, and then Bank business pretty much as usual, when it comes to bonuses, debt creation, property bubbles, manipulaiton of indices. Is that the Economics we are not allowed to question? The same field in which most text books considered banks as intermediaries and thought that the amount of money merely set the actual price and could thus be ignored. The most profitable activity on the planet is not providing a service or making things, it is manipulating numbers in a computer. Yes, it should be questioned.
In favour of banks that serve society rather than society serving banks! If you agree, please Google epetitions 64050 and sign.

    It's a bit of a conundrum though, isn't it?

If the collection of bankers is quite so intelligent, why was it that the lowly taxpayer had to run in behind them to pull their pants up?
