I was advised very strongly not to use soda crystals after they clogged up my machine.. the engineer was not impressed.. he wasn't even trying to sell me their own cleaning stuff. It all collected in a bend where a pipe went round a corner because it refused to dissolve.

Anyway.. vinegar stinks.. I made that stupid mistake once too.. never ever ever again!!!! I ended up running a boil wash with bleach and stopping it halfway through the cycle to just sit and soak.. I then ran a wash with nothing to clear the bleach then a super hot wash with my towels and zoflora.. I left the door open over a whole weekend to let it dry and the smell had almost gone.

I just run a 90'C wash a couple of times a month with a splosh of bleach now.. it does the job and doesn't cause any blockages.

I do 4x 40 degree washes per week on average, with an occasional wool wash. Very occasionally I'll do a 90 degree wash (maybe a couple of times a year). Have had the washing machine about 14 years, and it's never smelled.

However - I only ever use washing powder (Persil non-bio) and I never use fabric conditioner.
