Or I've done something completely stupid.....
I decided to clean my washing machine like the thread that's usually here, I put soda crystals in the main wash and malt vinegar in the softener part (I didn't have white vinegar and I'm sure l read on that thread it didn't matter).
NOW l have a fusty stinking washing machine!
Today I've washed out and cleaned the filter (hardly anything on it) and have done a 90 degree wash as normal but still the drum smells fusty and the washing isn't great smelling.
I'm so annoyed, I'm not sure it needed cleaning because l do a 90 degree wash every week, l was just being fussy.
Trust me! Any advice gladly received...

I would have avoided the malt vinegar and gone for white - the colourings, sweetness, etc. in malt don't lend it as well to cleaning as white. Not sure if that's the cause of the fustiness or not0

After washing some musty denim with vinegar(white not malt) to no effect I used dettol in the washing machine this seemed to work for the denim and may help you. I put a capful in the main wash cycle and used hottest wash.0

Have you tried doing another boil wash using just the soda?0

No l hadn't but thankyou, but what I'm going to do is buy some white (distilled?) vinegar and do another hot wash tomorrow.
Thanks for all replies so far, yes malt vinegar for chips only from now on! silly me.

I have used malt vinegar when washing corduroy in the machine, and it did smell a little bit after. but vinegary not fusty. just try a boil wash using the soda crystals or Bicarb of soda.0

You need to keep repeating the process until it's all cleaned out and it smells clean, think mine took 4 goes when I first did it. I don't think it's the vinegar as I use malt, but the gunk you are loosening.0

A bit of zoflora disinfectant in the machine will also help.0

I think it's possible that the vinegar has dislodged detergent gunk which has been accumulating for a very long time.
Malt vinegar will not create a musty smell and is fine for your washing - any vinegary smell will vanish after the washing is dry.
Keep up the good work and your machine should soon be sweet smelling again - unfortunately it's an unfair fact that starting a good regime can have an adverse effect at first as the problems created by previous practices are eradicated.0 -
The service manual on my washer suggests doing a 90 wash empty with no detergent monthly.
Sometimes it takes a few washes to clear it if you haven't done it regularly.
Personally, I really dislike this washing at 30 business and think most times it's false economy when you have to add stain removers and sort out a gunked up washing machine.
Washing machine smells are also associated with liquid detergents as they have no bleaching agents.
A hotter wash and a washing powder seems to eliminate the 'gunky washer' problem altogether.0
