Cheap Energy Club switch EDF to Ovo

Options
Hi all

first time post to the MSE forums and looking for a bit of advice.

I used the Cheap Energy Club in late-ish March to start a switch from EDF blue Apr 2014 to Ovo. I've still not heard anything from Ovo and until last week was reassured by the Energy Club's FAQs which said not to worry and not to be surprised if the new energy firm has no record of your switch if you contact them (which I did last week).

Getting concerned, I emailed Cheap Energy Club last week to ask what was going on (the switch is still 'in process' according to my account page) but I have yet to receive a response beyond a holding email.

The Blue Price promise expires tomorrow and as a result of a failure somewhere, I'll end up on a standard tarrif. I didn't expect an entirely smooth transition on May 1st, but I did think that giving the switch 5 weeks would give the process enough time.

Does anyone have any advice for my situation?

  • i would keep chasing the cheap energy club or try initiating a your own switch through ovo's own website directly. In the meantime move your edf tariff to there august 2015 tariff as this is cheaper than standard tariff and has no leaving penalty's at least this will save you some cash while things sort out.

    If you read this thread:

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/4936269

you'll see several people had problems using the cheap energy club, and others who used alternative switching sites had a more smooth transfer, receiving a confirmation email from Ovo with a day or two and a welcome letter from them within a week. So if the cheap energy club had done their job properly you should have heard from Ovo ages ago.

Hopefully, you'll hear from the cheap energy club soon.

Also, the Ovo representative on these boards may reply soon and be able to help.

I was in a similar position. After 17 days with no contact from Ovo I rang them to find out what was going on. They checked their systems and confirmed they knew absolutely nothing about the switch request and they told me I was just one of many Cheap Energy Club customers they were aware of in the same situation.

I emailed Cheap Energy Club and 5 days later I eventually received a reply saying they would look into it with MoneySupermarket and Ovo Energy. That was 2 weeks ago and I've still not had the courtesy of a reply/explanation of what went wrong from them.

Needless to say I've now cancelled my Cheap Energy Club membership (if they ever get round to actioning it) and have since taken my business elsewhere and will never use them again.

If the Cheap Energy Club, MoneySupermarket and Ovo Energy’s computer systems cannot guarantee 100% reliability in transferring switch request data between each other they shouldn’t be attempting to provide a switching service at all.

Take my advice jump on the EDF Blue+Price Promise August 2015 today/tomorrow (as an interim measure) then re-evaluate the market as the goal posts have moved slightly since you first applied.

Use other more reliable comparison sites such as energyhelpline or uswitch as imo the Cheap Energy Club is not fit for purpose.
  • Thank you all for your replies and advice. I made the switch to EDF's August 2015 tariff this afternoon - since I'd previously decided on the Ovo plan, I was fixated on making that work to the extent that I didn't even think of switching to another EDF plan as a backup. It's certainly better than going to the standard rate so many thanks for pointing that out. It was also really easy to do.

I'll give CEC another couple of weeks to see if they respond, but if not will look at the more established switching sites.

It seems incredible that a site dedicated to consumers has let itself get involved in providing a service which seemingly isn't particularly reliable and where there's even less accountability and contactability than mobile providers or energy firms.

    Hi everyone,

As 2013yearofthehouse advises once a switch to us has been initiated you should receive a confirmation email in a day or two.

Washingducks we would recommend giving us a quick call to check the switch has been initiated. A switch to another supplier takes four to six weeks and we don’t want you to be disadvantaged in anyway.

Hope this helps :) Let us know if you have any questions.

    Thanks - Ovo
