Unless I have misunderstood something, if I register for this service then anyone, whether I know them or not, can do a reverse lookup on my mobile number and it will tell them whose mobile number it is?

    No thanks.

As I understand it you can register your "username" to whatever you want.
So it does not have to be your real name
......much like this forum in fact.

Mind you many people have their name on their providers mobile voice mail message anyway - so you just ring the mobile and get it that way!

Why are you concerned if people know your name? Are you taking money from people who are not allowed to know your name?

It is the same people would be seeing if you were making a Faster Payment, an SO or DD, or writing a cheque.

I didn't see a username at Santander. May be other banks do allow it.

I'm not concerned about people I know or take money from, although I'm happy to give those people my sort code and account number when they need to send me a payment.

I am concerned about scammers using this system to harvest a list of names to go with random mobile numbers and then selling these on to other scammers and spammers. For the same reason I don't put my mobile number in the phone book.

OK well I have tested a send and receive of £1

All worked OK and was texted immediately from my bank to confirm - with name of sender
  • Can anyone find contact details of PayM?

I maybe paranoid but I would never consider registering for a service that doesn't make it clear who they are, where they are based and who runs them so that I can find it easily!

The fact that my bank advertises this service makes no difference to me, how can I trust a company that would've gone bankrupt if not for public bailouts.

PAYM is the name of the service, but a company called Vocalink Ltd are managing the database.

It's the same guys that have developed and are running the Faster Payments infrastructure.
