If you can't find old correspondence on this then it may be worthwhile just waiting for a month or two to see if they contact you. Often when you update your credit file it alerts those looking for you to your current address.

It wouldn't do any harm to contact the other CRAs - Noddle is a free sign-up and a statutory report costs £2 as in post#2

Thanks, so I have the pack all ready from step change.

I have included all debts on all my credit files. I just cant find this debt from a phone disagreement I had years ago. I have contacted three which were involved somehow but they confirm I have no debt with them.

I think it was another company who somehow claimed I owed something to do with the small print, but I never acknowledged the debt, I think I had a pretty good case that I did not owe them anything.

So I will go ahead with my DRO. I just have a few things to sort out.

I am including an EDF gas/electric bill and water bills. Step change want proof of what I owe, so I have requested updated bills because the ones I have show lower figures than what they tell me I owe on the phone.

Can anyone tell me how this works please?

I mean all the letters I have are at least a week old now and the amount has gone up since then? How do you put a final number on each debt?
  • Hi,

I have just had my DRO approved on Wednesday through Stepchange and they have been amazing what you need to do is submit the most up to date bill you have then once they had completed and double checked my details they told me it was ready to send I went and paid my £90 and before they hit the switch they told me to call British Gas,credit cards and anything that may have increased and get a final total they then updated this and hit send. That was on late Monday afternoon on Wednesday I showed on the register and yesterday I got my official letter off the OR. It has taken 3 months to complete from start to finish and they are very thorough and ask for everything they can to make sure it is a success. I cannot recommend them enough to guide you through this. Good Luck.

Thank you so much, this answers my questions very well.

So I start the process off now, and then get final figures when I give my metre readings and everything?

I am still trying to track down a company who used to ring me up regularly saying I owed them thousands for a mobile phone thing. I think they have given up and they do not show on any of my credit files.

So all I can do is hope they ring me again before my DRO is finalised, because I can not find their contact details.

I will be so annoyed if they ring me just after my DRO has gone through, it will be too late to add them to it?

As National Debtline said above. if an old debt resurfaces after your DRO has started it can't be included in it.

If it is very old - you haven't made any payments to it or acknowledged it for 6 years - it may be statute barred so thay wont be able to chase you for it.

Thanks for that, I am trying to work out the last time I acknowledged it. Its probably less than 6 years but getting on for that. I shouldnt have because it was a phone thing that I didnt want.

Last time they rang me was about a year ago I think and I made a point of saying I do not acknowledge this debt, I wonder if this is why it doesnt show on my credit file. They are trying to get me involved with something that is nothing to do with me.

I have a question please about when and how a debt becomes statute barred? Does it happen automatically?

but if its not showing on my file then its just as good as being state barred isn't it?

No, not showing on your credit file just means it has been 6 years since the default. You may have been making small payments ever since and so the clock hasn't started running on the 6 years for statute barred.

I havent ever made payments to this one company who is chasing me, because I never agreed I owed them anything. I went for a special offer and cancelled within the time just as the agreement but they claim I still owe them thousands.

Now they give me a hard time on the phone every now and then sometimes letter but I regret never keeping them.

My DRO is all going through, only about £10K. I cant find this company to include them, only remember their last phone call to me, it was about a year ago and very aggressive trying to get me to admit I am responsible for owing them something.

The other thing I should have done is that letter asking them to prove it, so now its too late to include them in the DRO, if they do contact me again I will do the prove it letter.

    That sounds a suitable plan!
