Moving House - Gas

Hi,
I'm moving into my new house this weekend. I am currently on an electricity only tariff (I have economy 7 heating) that I will just cancel when I leave, It has a £5 cancellation fee so that no problem. The property I'm moving to is gas heating. I thought that I could just move in on the day contact whoever the previous owner had it with, give them a meter reading and continue with this new supplier.
But someone told me I need to contact the supplier in advance or they will just shut the gas and electricity off when the previous owner moves out.
Is that correct as I don't even know who the current owner has it with at the moment and I was just going to find out on the move day. But if I need to start arranging the handover now I'd better find out.
Thanks

You'll be in a deemed contract the day you move in. Just take meter readings on move in day and ring supplier that currently supplies house, telling them the readings, your move in date and your details. They will probably put you on their standard tariff, but you can then switch to whoever you like from then on.
Unless the previous owners specifically tell them to turn everything off (which they shouldn't!) then it should be fine.0 -
No. No one will shut anything off. That stopped happening at least 15 years ago.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
